Welcome From Our Principal, Mark Onorato
2016 - 2017
On behalf of the staff at the William L. Buck Elementary School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year. I hope everyone had a fun and restful summer with family and friends. As in the past, we believe this will be another transformational year for all of our students at the William L. Buck School.
The Buck faculty and staff are committed to the academic, social, and emotional success of our students. We are constantly striving to improve our level of test scores on the NYS Assessments and have shown steady progress. Our district currently implements such fine programs as Emotional Literacy, Taxi Dog (2nd Grade Classes), Beautiful Me (5th and 6th grade girls) and our Character Education program. These programs help develop our children’s self esteem, social awareness, and personal responsibility. These programs focus on many issues that we prepare our children for on a daily basis. Some topics discussed are cyber bullying, friendship, and conflict resolution. In addition we will be utilizing our new reading programs: SuperKids for grades K-2, and Journeys for grades 3-6.
Our school day starts at 8:25 a.m. (you may begin to drop off at 8:00 a.m. on the blacktop) to 2:55 p.m., with kindergarten ending at 2:50 p.m. for early dismissal. Children often get nervous before the first day of school. You can put them at ease by talking with them openly about what they can expect. Also, listen to your child and their concerns. Speak positively to them about school and their experiences.
Our school psychologists, social worker, teachers, school nurse, and myself will be there to welcome and encourage them with open arms.
The WLB School houses the Center for Individual Development (CID). These classes (primary and intermediate: grades 1-6) have been established for those students in our district who require a small group setting in order to succeed. The Committee on Special Education assigns the students to these classes. Certified special education teachers and full time teaching assistants and teacher aides staff these classes.
As technology in the world continues to grow and further advance, so does that of our district. Each of our classrooms and many of our small group settings, are equipped with SMARTboards, Smart Tables, iPads, chromebooks, document cameras, desktop and laptop computers. Our district now has 3D printers, which were on display last year at “Lights on for Education”. With continued training our teachers will begin to assimilate the 3D printers into our curriculum when necessary. These exciting new instructional tools enhance the love of learning and participation of our children. We encourage you to visit our website to help assist your child’s learning and explore the updates throughout our district.

Our PTA remains an integral part of our school family. Their fundraising activities help support many cultural art programs, holiday events, and class trips. The faculty and PTA work hand in hand for the benefit of our students. Please attend our monthly meetings (scheduled in the school calendar) and sign up for the fun and exciting activities that are planned by our PTA throughout the school year.
I look forward to meeting and continuing to work with each of you as we strive to serve our students and help each of them reach their full potential. In closing, please know our doors will always be open to our community. Feel free to email or call upon us if you should have any questions or concerns. We know and understand that communication is the key to a successful year.
Thank you for your continued support!
